Indonesia–Italy Collaboration for Green Steel: Visit to Tenova in Italy

The Vice Minister of Industry, Faisol Riza, attended an invitation from PT Tata Metal Lestari to visit the Tenova laboratory facility in Castellanza, Italy, on Tuesday, 2 December 2025. The visit brought Indonesian government leadership directly to one of the world's leading developers of metallurgical technology, offering a first-hand look at the research and engineering that underpin the next generation of cleaner steel production. International engagements of this kind play an important role in connecting Indonesian industry with the global expertise and innovation needed to accelerate its own transformation.
During the visit, the Vice Minister was accompanied by the GM Manufacturing of PT Tata Metal Lestari, Rendra Fernanda, the CEO of Tenova, Roberto Pancaldi, and the Deputy Head of Mission of the Indonesian Embassy in Italy, Tika Wihanasari. The presence of senior figures from government, industry, and the diplomatic mission underscored both the strategic importance of the collaboration and the strong bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Italy in the field of advanced manufacturing.
Strengthening green steel development
The visit aimed to strengthen government support for the development of green steel in Indonesia — a priority that sits at the intersection of industrial competitiveness and the nation's climate commitments. By engaging directly with leading technology providers and demonstrating government backing, initiatives like this help create the conditions for cleaner production methods to take root and scale within the domestic steel sector.
PT Tata Metal Lestari and Tenova are currently working together to develop a continuous galvanizing line project, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions in the production process while maintaining the quality and performance that customers depend on. The collaboration represents a key step toward more sustainable, lower-carbon steel manufacturing in Indonesia — combining world-class technology with local ambition to help build an industry that is both globally competitive and environmentally responsible.
